Mental math tricks help kids solve problems faster by reorganizing numbers in ways the brain handles more easily. The 7 tricks below cover multiplication, addition, subtraction, and number patterns. They work from elementary math through junior high math and build the confidence that carries into advanced courses, STAAR math tests, and math competition prep.
Why Mental Math Matters for McKinney Students
The STAAR math test in Texas isn’t a memorization test. Since its redesign, it focuses on multi-step reasoning and real-world problem solving. A child who can only follow written procedures runs out of time. A child who thinks flexibly with numbers moves through those problems with confidence.
That’s why mental math isn’t a party trick. It’s infrastructure.
Students who build strong number sense in elementary school carry that foundation into junior high math, Algebra 1, Geometry, and beyond. Research published in Cogent Education found that mental math ability and mathematical reasoning are directly linked in 5th graders – stronger mental computation led to stronger problem solving, not the other way around.

Trick 1: The Make-10 Strategy
Best for: Grades 1 to 4, addition
When adding two numbers, borrow from one to bring the other to 10 first. Then add what’s left.
Example: 8 + 6 → take 2 from the 6 to make 10 → 10 + 4 = 14
- 7 + 5 → (7+3) + 2 = 12
- 9 + 7 → (9+1) + 6 = 16
The brain handles multiples of 10 almost automatically. By routing every addition through 10, students stop counting individual steps and start thinking in groups – the foundation of fractions, decimals, and Algebra 1 down the road.

Trick 2: Multiply by 9 Using Your Hands
Best for: Grades 2 to 5, multiplication tables
Hold both hands out, fingers numbered 1 to 10 left to right. To multiply 9 by any number, fold down that finger. Count fingers to the left for the tens digit. Count fingers to the right for the ones digit.
Example: 9 × 7 → fold finger 7 → 6 left, 3 right → 63
- 9 × 4 → fold 4 → 3 left, 6 right → 36
- 9 × 8 → fold 8 → 7 left, 2 right → 72
Here’s the deeper pattern: every answer in the 9 times table has digits that add up to 9. (6+3=9, 3+6=9, 7+2=9.) Once your child sees that pattern, they don’t need the hand trick anymore. Understanding replaces the shortcut – which is the point.
Trick 3: Double and Halve for Multiplication
Best for: Grades 3 to 7, multiplication
Double one number and halve the other. The product stays the same. Repeat until the numbers are easy to multiply.
Example: 25 × 8 → double 25 to 50, halve 8 to 4 → 50 × 4 = 200
- 14 × 5 → double 5 to 10, halve 14 to 7 → 7 × 10 = 70
- 16 × 25 → halve 16 to 8, double 25 to 50 → halve 8 to 4, double 50 to 100 → 400
This is the distributive and associative properties of multiplication working in disguise. Students who know this trick walk into math competition prep in McKinney already thinking the way competition problems reward.

Trick 4: Multiply Any Number by 11
Best for: Grades 3 to 6
For a 2-digit number: add the two digits together and place the result between them.
Example: 11 × 43 → 4+3=7 → 473
- 11 × 25 → 2+5=7 → 275
- 11 × 54 → 5+4=9 → 594
What if the middle sum is 10 or more? 11 × 87 → 8+7=15 → write 5 in the middle, carry the 1 to the 8 → 957.
Every student who sees this trick for the first time asks “but WHY does that work?” That question is what we nurture. Curiosity is the engine of real math learning, and in person math tutors who push students to ask why produce better math thinkers than any workbook ever will.
Trick 5: Round Up, Then Adjust
Best for: Grades 2 to 8, addition and subtraction
Round one number up to the nearest 10. Do the easy math. Then subtract whatever you added during rounding.
Example: 47 + 38 → round 38 to 40 → 47+40=87 → minus 2 → 85
For subtraction: 73 – 28 → round 28 to 30 → 73-30=43 → add 2 back → 45
- 56 + 37 → round to 40 → 96 → minus 3 → 93
- 84 – 49 → round to 50 → 34 → plus 1 → 35
This works on STAAR math problems, homework, and everyday life. When a McKinney parent needs to estimate a grocery bill in seconds, this is how it’s done. Teaching it to your child gives them that same mental fluency.
Trick 6: Break Apart to Add Big Numbers
Best for: Grades 3 to 7, multi-digit addition
Break each number into hundreds, tens, and ones. Add the pieces separately, then combine.
Example: 346 + 278
- 300 + 200 = 500
- 40 + 70 = 110
- 6 + 8 = 14
- Total: 500 + 110 + 14 = 624
Students who can decompose numbers understand place value deeply. That understanding is the foundation of fractions, decimals, algebra, and every topic from Grade 4 through Algebra 2.
One of our McKinney 6th graders put it best: “I’m in 6th grade and I’m learning 9th grade stuff.” That kind of acceleration starts with number sense built early.
Trick 7: Division Shortcut for 5s
Best for: Grades 3 to 6, division
To divide any number by 5: double it, then divide by 10.
Example: 70 ÷ 5 → double = 140 → ÷10 = 14
- 85 ÷ 5 → 170 → 17
- 130 ÷ 5 → 260 → 26
- 235 ÷ 5 → 470 → 47
This works because dividing by 5 is mathematically identical to multiplying by 2 and dividing by 10. Students who understand that relationship, not just the trick, build the kind of algebraic thinking that math competition coaching and junior high math both demand.
